NBL Free Agency is well underway and with the arrival of new head coach Mike Kelly, things will start heating up for the Phoenix.

With only five contracted players so far, including Mitch Creek, Owen Foxwell, Reuben Te Rangi, Alan Williams, and development player Anzac Rissetto, there are plenty of spots to fill in the coming months.

With 25 years of experience in the NBL, through playing and coaching, Kelly’s second stint as head coach in the league is something he is excited by, and he immediately has set his focus on seeing what talent there is to complement the current roster.

“We have some great players on the team already, led by Mitch Creek and Alan Williams. We’re trying to get some great players that will fit alongside them. Some defensive intensity and some toughness I think is going to hopefully run throughout the group. As well as bringing in some more offensive firepower to work beside those guys,” Kelly said.

Phoenix has seven roster spots still available, including two import spaces, not including development players. Local players are the priority for Kelly before looking overseas to finalise the roster.

“We are definitely going after the best locals we can right now, Australians and New Zealand players. We have one import in Alan Williams, so it’s nice to have that locked away, a really high quality person and player. Once we have filled in the locals, then we will go after those import spots,” he said.
